How to Disable Dashboard Cache and Data Refresh During Specific Hours in Bold BI

Published:

In certain use cases, you may need to temporarily disable dashboard cache refresh or data source refresh during specific periods.
This knowledge base article explains how to achieve this requirement using one of the following approaches, depending on your scenario.

Currently, Bold BI does not provide a built‑in option to pause and resume refresh schedules based on time.

Option 1: Stop the Bold BI Job Service

  • Stopping the Job Service will pause all background and scheduled operations in Bold BI.

Configuration Steps:

  1. Open your Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager.
  2. Go to Application Pools.

  3. Select the BoldBIJob (or your BI Jobs) application pool.

  4. Click Stop during the hours you want to pause refresh.

  5. Click Start when you want refresh operations to resume.
Impact
  • When the Job Service is stopped, the following operations will not run:

    • Dashboard cache refresh
    • Data source refresh
    • Scheduled dashboard exports
    • User import jobs
    • Azure AD / Windows AD synchronization
    • Pending dashboard downloads and uploads

Note: This option affects all scheduled jobs globally.

Option 2: Disable refresh schedules using a database update (granular pause)

  • If you require more control, you can disable and enable refresh schedules directly from the Bold BI database.

Configuration Steps:

  • Take a full backup of the Bold BI database.

These steps require direct database access. Ensure you take a full database backup before making any changes.

  • Connect to your Bold BI database using your DB admin tool.
  • Disable Cache and Refresh Schedules
    Sample SQL code:
UPDATE bbi_scheduleexport
SET isenabled = 0
WHERE exporttypeid IN (1, 2);
  • Re‑Enable Cache and Refresh Schedules
    Sample SQL code:
UPDATE bbi_scheduleexport
SET isenabled = 1
WHERE exporttypeid IN (1, 2);

Export Type Reference

  • exporttypeid = 1 → Dashboard cache refresh
  • exporttypeid = 2 → Data source refresh
  • You can run these queries manually or automate them using a database scheduler to disable refresh operations during specific hours and re‑enable them later.

Direct database updates can impact the application if used incorrectly. Always validate in a non-production environment first and keep a rollback plan.

Recommendation

  • Use Option 1 if you want to pause all background jobs temporarily.
  • Use Option 2 if you need selective control over cache and data refresh schedules without stopping all services.
