Disabling Comments on Bold BI Dashboard Widgets?
Published:
Commenting on Bold BI dashboard widgets enables real-time collaboration by allowing users to add notes, feedback, or questions directly on individual widgets (e.g., charts, grids, KPIs). This feature is useful for teams reviewing data, discussing insights, or requesting clarifications without leaving the dashboard.
Default Behavior.
- Embedded Dashboards: When dashboards are embedded using JavaScript, the comment feature is disabled by default. This is because the embedding method does not support comment functionality.
Bold BI Server: Currently, Bold BI provides a site‑level option to disable the widget comments at globally. This article explains how to configure the visibility of widget comments at the site level in Bold BI® using the custom_ui.json file in the UMS settings and allows administrators to control whether widget comments are displayed or hidden for all non‑admin users within a specific site.
How to Disable Comments on Widgets manually.
- To manually disable the comment icon on specific widgets, follow these steps:
- Open the dashboard in Bold BI Designer or the Dashboard Editor and select the widget you want to modify.
- In the widget’s properties panel, look for the Comment option and uncheck the “Enable Commenting” box.
- This can be done manually for each widget on the dashboard.
- Global disable: Currently, we have an option to disable the widget comments at globally. This feature works on a site-by-site basis and allows administrators to hide widget comments for all non-admin users within the selected site.
- Embedded dashboards: Comments are already disabled by default when using the JavaScript Embedding SDK (Component or IFrame mode). No extra action is needed.
- Future consideration: The Bold BI team is actively reviewing community feedback for a global/default-off option for comments — check release notes or the feedback portal for updates.
- Performance & UX: Disabling comments reduces visual clutter and prevents unnecessary interactions in read-only or presentation scenarios.
