How to Enlarge Bar and Column Chart Data Points on Hover in Bold BI

Published:

By default, Bold BI charts display tooltips when you hover over data points. In dashboards that contain dense or closely grouped bars and columns, tooltips alone may not be enough to quickly identify the active value.

Starting with Bold BI v16.1, modern Bar and Column charts (including stacked variants) support enlarging the hovered data point. This visual scaling improves focus, readability, and interactivity without requiring any custom code.

Supported Chart Types

The feature is available on the following modern (V2) comparison charts:

  • Bar Chart
  • Column Chart
  • Stacked Bar Chart
  • Stacked Column Chart
  • 100% Stacked Bar Chart
  • 100% Stacked Column Chart
These charts are rendered using the modern visualization components.

This feature is supported starting from Bold BI v16.1 and is available only within Modern (V2/EJ2) Comparison Charts. Support is not provided for Classic Chart Widgets or any Bold BI versions prior to v16.1.

Configuration Steps

  1. Upgrade Bold BI to version 16.1 or later.

  2. Create a new dashboard or Edit an existing one.

  3. In the Dashboard Designer, add a modern Bar or Column chart (or a stacked variant) from the Modern Charts section.

  4. In the Assign Data panel, bind the required data fields.

  5. Navigate to the Properties Panel.

  6. Under Basic Settings, enable the Enlarge Point on Hover option

  7. Adjust the Hover Scale Factor as needed.

  • Minimum Hover Scale Factor = 1.05

  • Maximum Hover Scale Factor = 1.95

Note: This behavior is handled internally by the EJ2 chart control and does not require any additional scripting or configuration.

Conclusion

When the option is enabled, the hovered bar or column scales up visually so the active data point stands out clearly from surrounding values. This subtle highlight helps users maintain context while exploring the chart, especially when working with closely grouped data points.
