How to Display Both Location Name and Value in the Map Widget in Bold BI

Published:

Starting from Bold BI v16.1, the Map widget supports displaying both the location name and its corresponding measure value together. This enhancement improves readability of geographic visualizations and ensures consistent behavior during drill‑down interactions. Previously, only one of these values could be displayed at a time.

Implementation Steps

Step 1: Open the Dashboard in Edit Mode
  • Open your dashboard in the Dashboard Designer.
  • Select the Map widget you want to configure.

Step 2: Configure Map Data Fields
  • In the Assign Data panel:

    • Set the Location field (e.g., Country, State, City).
    • Set the Value field (e.g., Sales, Revenue, Count).

Step 4: Verify Drill‑Down Behavior (If Applicable)
  • When drilling down on the map:
    • If Location Name + Value is selected, both are retained and displayed in the drill‑down view.
    • This behavior is consistent across supported geographic levels.

Notes & Best Practices

  • This feature is available only in Bold BI v16.1 and later.
  • Ensure both Location and Value fields are properly bound; otherwise, only partial information may appear.
  • For cleaner visuals:
    • Use concise measure formatting (e.g., K, M).
    • Prefer tooltips when labels may overlap in dense maps.
  • Drill‑down behavior follows the label configuration selected in the parent map.

Conclusion

The Map widget enhancement in Bold BI v16.1 allows dashboards to present geographic insights more clearly by displaying both location names and their corresponding values together, while also maintaining consistent drill‑down behavior. This eliminates the need for workarounds and improves overall dashboard usability.
