Improve Dashboard Loading Performance with Page-Wise Loading and Widget Club (Batch Size) in Bold BI
Published:
Overview
For long, scrollable dashboards with many widgets, Bold BI offers Page-Wise Loading and Widget Club (Batch Size) options. These features help reduce initial load time by rendering widgets sequentially and bundling API requests.
- Page-Wise Loading — Renders widgets page by page (default: 24 rows per page).
- Batch Size (Widget Club) — Controls how many widgets are loaded in a single API request.
Prerequisites
- Bold BI version v15.1 or higher.
- A long dashboard that scrolls beyond one screen (many widgets or tall layout).
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Open the Dashboard in Edit Mode
- Go to your dashboard in Bold BI Dashboard Designer.
- Click Edit.
2. Enable Page-Wise Loading
- Open Dashboard Properties (click the dashboard canvas or use the Properties panel).
- Locate and enable the Enable Page Wise Loading option.
How it works: - The dashboard is divided into virtual pages (default: 24 rows per page).
- Widgets on subsequent pages load only after all widgets in the previous page have completed rendering.
- This significantly improves initial load time for tall/scrollable dashboards.
Example: - A dashboard with 60 rows will be divided into:
- Page 1: Rows 1-24
- Page 2: Rows 25-48
- Page 3: Rows 49-60
- With Page-Wise Loading enabled, Page 2 begins loading only after Page 1 has finished rendering, and Page 3 begins loading only after Page 2 has completed. This ensures that users can start interacting with the initial content sooner instead of waiting for the entire dashboard to load.
3. Configure Batch Size (Widget Club)
- In the same Dashboard Properties panel, find Batch Size.
- Enter the desired number of widgets to bundle per API request (e.g., 5, 8, or 10).
Important Notes: - Some widgets are treated as Load Widgets and are not clubbed (loaded individually). These include:
- Grid widget
- Pivot Grid
- Charts with row-series
- KPI / Number Card with series
- Bubble / Scatter charts with row-series
4. Save and Test
- Click Save / Publish.
- Open the dashboard in View mode.
- Scroll down and monitor Network tab (browser DevTools) to verify:
- Widgets load page by page.
- Requests are batched according to your Batch Size.
Best Practices
- Start with Batch Size 5–8 and test performance.
- Use Page-Wise Loading only on dashboards taller than 1–2 screens.
- Combine with Virtual Scrolling (where available) for Grid/Pivot widgets.
- Monitor server resources — very large batch sizes may increase memory usage.
Troubleshooting
- Feature not visible? — Confirm you are on Bold BI v15.1 or higher.
- No performance improvement? — Check dashboard height and try different Batch Size values.
- Widgets still load all at once? — Ensure Enable Page Wise Loading is turned on and the layout exceeds 24 rows.
