How to Prevent Overlapping Category Axis Labels in a Bold BI Column Chart

Published:

If category axis labels overlap in a Bold BI Column Chart, you can improve readability by adjusting the axis settings available in the widget properties.

This article explains how to reduce or prevent overlapping labels by using:

  • Category axis label rotation
  • Auto Interval
  • Interval
  • Label overflow mode
  • Trim Axis Labels
  • Label Maximum Width

Note
Bold BI’s official Column Chart documentation lists Trim and Hide for category axis label overflow handling.
Wrap is documented for legend text overflow, not for category axis labels.

Steps to Prevent Axis Label Overlap

Step 1: Open the dashboard and select the Column Chart widget

Open the required dashboard in Bold BI Dashboard Designer, then select the Column Chart widget.

Step 3: Rotate the category axis labels

Use Category axis label rotation to angle the labels and reduce overlap.

Common values include:

  • 45°
  • 90°

Choose the angle that makes the category names easier to read.

Step 4: Disable Auto Interval if you want manual control

By default, Auto Interval is enabled. Bold BI uses it to automatically determine the spacing of category axis labels.

If you want to control label density manually, disable Auto Interval.

Step 5: Set a custom Interval value

After disabling Auto Interval, set the Interval value to show fewer labels on the axis.

For example:

  • 2 shows every second label
  • 3 shows every third label

This is useful when the chart contains many categories.

Step 6: Choose a Label overflow mode

Use Label overflow mode to control how overlapping category labels are displayed.

Available options include:

  • Trim – shortens the visible text
  • Hide – prevents overlapping labels from being displayed

Choose the option that best fits your dashboard layout.

Step 7: Enable Trim Axis Labels and set Label Maximum Width

If you want long labels to be shortened instead of fully shown, enable Trim Axis Labels.

Then set Label Maximum Width to control how much label text is visible before trimming occurs.
