How to Display a Selected Currency Code in a Bold BI Number Card

Published:

This article explains how to display a currency-specific value in a Number Card widget in Bold BI by using a currency field such as CurrencyCode and filtering the widget based on the selected currency.

This approach is useful when your dataset already contains values for different currencies and you want users to select a currency, such as USD, EUR, or INR, and view the corresponding result in the dashboard.

The method in this article is therefore documented as:

  • filtering the displayed value by currency, and
  • showing the related currency code or symbol in the Number Card layout.

Note: This method controls how the selected currency value is displayed in the dashboard. It does not perform exchange-rate conversion.

Step 1: Open the dashboard in edit mode

  1. Open Bold BI.
  2. Go to the dashboard you want to update.
  3. Select Edit Dashboard to open the dashboard in design mode.

Step 2: Verify the dataset fields

Confirm that the dataset used in the dashboard contains:

  • a numeric field, such as SalesAmount
  • a currency field, such as CurrencyCode

Note: Both fields should come from the same dataset so the filter can correctly affect the Number Card.

Step 3: Add a filter widget for currency selection

  1. Add a Filter Widget to the dashboard.
  2. Bind the filter to the CurrencyCode field.
  3. Configure the filter so users can choose the currency they want to view.
  4. If appropriate for your use case, set the selection mode to Single Select so users view one currency at a time.

Step 4: Add a Number Card widget

  1. Add a Number Card widget to the dashboard.
  2. Open its data configuration panel.

Step 5: Configure the Number Card data

In the Number Card data configuration:

  1. Drag SalesAmount into the Measure section.
  2. Set the aggregation required for the business case, for example Sum.
  3. Drag CurrencyCode into the Series section if you want the selected currency to be visible as part of the card display.

Tip: If your dataset contains a separate currency symbol column, you can use that field in the display instead of CurrencyCode, depending on how you want the card to appear.

Step 6: Optional - apply fixed currency formatting to the measure

If you want the numeric value to appear in a currency format, open Measure Formatting for the measure field and set:

  • Type = Currency
  • Currency culture = the required culture

Important: Official documentation clearly supports fixed currency formatting through Currency culture. It does not explicitly state that the currency culture changes dynamically from a selected dataset value at runtime.

Step 7: Preview and validate the result

  1. Switch the dashboard to View mode.
  2. Select a currency from the filter widget.
  3. Confirm that the Number Card updates based on the selected currency.

Verify the following:

  • the displayed value changes according to the selected currency filter
  • the currency code or symbol shown in the card matches the selected item
  • the aggregation shown in the Number Card is the expected one

Step 8: Save the dashboard

  1. Select Save.
  2. Publish the dashboard if your environment requires publishing before end users can access the changes.

Expected result

After completing these steps:

  • users can select a currency from the filter widget
  • the Number Card displays the filtered value for that currency
  • the card can also show the related currency code or symbol when configured through the display fields

Notes

  • This approach is best suited when your dataset already contains values grouped by currency.
  • This article does not describe exchange-rate conversion.
  • If currency conversion is required, it must be handled in the dataset, query logic, or an expression-based design that is separately validated for your environment.
  • For official currency formatting options, use Measure Formatting and set the measure type to Currency.
