Sharing UMS and Global Settings Between Bold BI and Bold Reports

Published:

Overview

This article explains how Bold BI and Bold Reports can be integrated within a Common Deployment using the User Management Server (UMS). It also outlines how shared configurations such as user accounts and application settings can be centrally managed and applied across both platforms.

Before diving into the integration details, let’s first understand what User Management Server and Common Deployment mean in this context.

Common Deployment

Common Deployment refers to the ability to install Bold BI and Bold Reports within a single environment. This setup allows both platforms to share a unified login process and centralized configuration. By following the steps outlined in this guide, users can streamline deployment and management across both applications.

UMS Management Server

The User Management Server (UMS) is a centralized identity and access management system that enables administrators to manage users, their profiles, and application settings for both Bold BI and Bold Reports.

UMS also functions as an Identity Provider (IDP), maintaining a unified user directory that can be accessed by multiple Bold BI and Bold Reports tenants. When both platforms are installed in the same environment, they can share a single instance of UMS, allowing for:

  1. Centralized user management
  2. Unified authentication and authorization
  3. Consistent application settings across platforms

This integration simplifies administration and enhances the user experience by providing seamless access and consistent configuration across both reporting and business intelligence tools.

Inheriting UMS Global Settings

The following configuration options can be inherited from UMS into both Bold BI and Bold Reports sites:

How to Enable Global Settings:

To enable global settings inheritance for a specific site in Bold BI or Bold Reports, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Bold BI or Bold Reports site using an account with UMS Admin privileges.

  2. Navigate to the Site Management Page: Go to the following URL in your browser:

Sharing Users Across Sites

The User Management Server (UMS) supports centralized user management, allowing user accounts to be shared across multiple sites. This can be achieved in two ways:

  1. During Site Creation: When creating a new site, existing user accounts from UMS can be assigned directly to the new site.
  2. From the UMS Users Page: Administrators can assign users to one or more sites by navigating to the Users section in UMS and configuring site-level access.

This centralized approach ensures consistent user identity and access control across all Bold BI and Bold Reports environments.

During Site Creation:

  • You can select users as administrators from the existing UMS user list and assign them directly during site creation. For other users, we need to assign the users from UMS users Page

From the UMS Users Page:

To share site access with an existing user in Bold BI or Bold Reports, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the UMS Portal: Open your browser and go to:
{your-domain}/ums/administration/user-management/users

  1. Select the User: From the list of users, click on the user to whom you want to grant access to another site.

  3. Choose the Target Site: In the dialog that appears, select the site you want to assign to the user and confirm the action.

This process ensures seamless user access across multiple sites without the need to create duplicate accounts in different applications.
