How to apply a dedicated filter to only a specific set of widgets in Bold BI?

Published:

In Bold BI, filters can be applied at various levels, including dashboard level widget filters , widget-level filters like Measure Filtering, Date Column Filtering and Dimension Filtering, and dedicated filters for a set of widgets.

Dedicated Widget Filtering

dedicated filter allows you to filter only a specific group of widgets without affecting the entire dashboard. This is useful when you want multiple widgets to be controlled by the same filter while keeping other widgets unchanged.

For example, consider the Sales Performance Dashboard. In this dashboard, the drop-down filter widget titled “Select Product Category” affects only the specific Product Sales Breakdown widget instead of filtering the entire dashboard.

Steps to Apply a Dedicated Filter to a Set of Widgets

This use case scenario can be achieved by configuring the required Master Listener Relationship in Bold BI.

Please find the steps below to achieve the filter interaction for specific widgets.

Step 1: Add a Filter Widget

  • Open your Bold BI dashboard.
  • Click on the Widgets menu and select a filter widget, such as a Drop-down List or Date Picker or any other filter widgets.

  • Drag and drop the chosen filter widget onto the dashboard.

Step 2: Configure the Filter Widget

  • Click on the Filter Widget to open the properties panel. Please refer to the following document for more information on Combo Box Widget.

  • Choose the appropriate data source and the field to filter (e.g., “Select Product Category”).
  • Enable multi-selection if required to allow users to select multiple options.

Step 3: Assign the Filter to a Specific Set of Widgets

  • Click on the filter panel and “Assign Widgets” in the Filter panel.
  • Select only the widgets you want to be affected by this filter.

  • Click Update to save the changes.
  • Once these steps are completed, the selected widgets will update based on the filter selection while the rest of the dashboard remains unchanged.

Widgets That Support In-Widget Filtering

  • Currently, the Grid Widget is the only widget that natively supports in-widget filtering. To enable this feature:

  • Enable the Allow filter option.

  • This allows the users to apply filters directly within the grid to refine the displayed data.

Alternative Approaches for Widget-Level Filtering

Since most widgets do not support in-widget filtering, alternative methods can be employed:

Using Drill-Down Filtering

  • Certain visualization widgets, such as charts and Tree Maps, support filtering through drill-down interactions.

  • Users can click on a specific data point (e.g., a section of a pie chart) to filter the data within that chart dynamically.

  • However, this type of filtering is limited to hierarchical drill-down interactions.

Please refer to the following document to know more on Drill Down Filtering.

Conclusion

While only the Grid widget currently supports direct in-widget filtering, other widgets can be filtered using dedicated filter widgets with a master-listener relationship or through drill-down interactions. Understanding these options allows users to create dashboards with precise and flexible filtering capabilities.
