Customizing Series Colors with the Series Palette For Charts
The Series Palette feature in Bold BI allows you to apply colors to chart series using either a default palette or a custom color palette. This feature becomes available when you have configured the row section in the chart. By default, the colors are applied using the default palette, but you can customize them using various options.
Series Palette Options
1. Use Default Palette
The Use Default Palette option allows you to apply the default color palette to your chart series. This is the default setting, and when enabled, the chart series will automatically use the pre-defined colors from the default palette.
- Toggle Off: If you toggle off the Use Default Palette option, you will see additional settings for customizing the color palette, specifically the Color Mapping Type.
2. Color Mapping Type
The Color Mapping Type option allows you to apply colors to the chart series based on either the data or the index. This option gives you flexibility in how colors are assigned to your chart data.
a. Data-Based Color Mapping
When you select Data as the color mapping type, colors are assigned to the chart series based on the data itself. For example, you can assign specific colors to certain data points. This option is useful when you want to highlight specific years, categories, or data points with specific colors. By default, the Color Mapping Type is set to Data.
b. Index-Based Color Mapping
When you select Index as the color mapping type, colors are assigned based on the series index, ensuring that the colors remain consistent even if the data is modified. This method can display a maximum of 15 distinct colors, after which the colors will repeat from the earlier set.
Example: If you’re displaying countries based on the increasing order of case counts, index-based color mapping will allow you to assign a specific color (e.g., red) to the top-ranked country. This ensures that the color red is maintained for the country with the largest case count, even if the order changes.
In the example below, the first index (index1) was configured with red, so the year 2021 was initially displayed in red.
However, after sorting the years, 2020 moved to the first index, and the red color was then applied to the year 2020.
Note: It is recommended to use index-based color customization only for a small number of series (up to 15 series) to ensure clarity and avoid color repetition.
By using these settings, you can create visually distinct and meaningful charts in Bold BI that highlight your data in a way that is easy to understand and analyze.
