Adjust Axis Range settings to Show Hidden Sections in Bar Charts in Bold BI

Published:

When visualizing data in a bar chart using Bold BI, it’s possible to encounter a scenario where smaller values are not prominently displayed when plotted alongside much larger values. This can make it difficult to analyze the full range of data effectively. To address this issue, Bold BI provides a feature that allows you to use dashboard parameters to adjust the axis range settings dynamically. This ensures that even smaller values are visible and can be analyzed in the context of larger values.

Steps to Adjust Axis Range Using Dashboard Parameters

To make smaller values visible in a bar chart when there are large disparities in data ranges, follow these steps:

1. Configure the Chart Widget

Begin by configuring the chart widget with the required fields. Ensure that the data is correctly set up to represent the categories and values you wish to visualize.

2. Create Dashboard Parameters

Access the Dashboard parameters dialog from the data source designer page. Create a new dashboard parameter in literal mode with a number data type. This parameter will be used to control the axis range dynamically.

3. Edit Axis Range Settings

In the chart widget properties panel, locate the “Edit Axis Range” option under the “Axis” settings. This will allow you to customize the range of the axis based on the dashboard parameter.

4. Configure Axis Range Settings

Open the “Axis Range Settings” dialog and enter the created dashboard parameter for the “maximum” input option. This will link the axis range to the parameter, allowing for dynamic adjustments.

5. Save and Preview Dashboard

Save the widget settings and preview the dashboard. At this stage, the chart will still display the default axis range.

6. Adjust Parameters in View Mode

In the preview or view mode, adjust the dashboard parameter value to set a new maximum value for the axis.

The chart widget axis will update dynamically to reflect the new range, making smaller values visible.

By following these steps, you can ensure that all sections of your data, including those with smaller values, are displayed in the bar chart. This allows for a more comprehensive analysis and better data-driven decision-making.
