How to Efficiently Handle Nulls and Blanks in Bold BI Datasource
Overview
When working with datasets in Bold BI, it’s common to encounter null or blank values that can disrupt the visualization and analysis process. To maintain data integrity and ensure accurate visualizations, Bold BI provides features to find and replace these values both at the data source level and at the individual column level. This article will guide you through the steps to efficiently handle nulls and blanks in your datasets. By utilizing the replace value support at both the data source and column levels, you can ensure that your datasets in Bold BI are clean, consistent, and ready for effective visualization. This approach helps in better data management and provides a more accurate representation of your data.
Replacing Nulls and Blanks at the Data Source Level
To replace all nulls and blanks in the connected data source columns with a required value, follow these steps:
- Edit the actual data source and click the Replace option.
- A dialog will appear, allowing you to replace the common value for both Null and Blanks by clicking the Edit option.
- Enter the desired replacement value, such as “No data available.”
- Click the Apply button and save the data source. After these changes, all the nulls and blanks present in every column will be changed to the common text, ensuring consistency across the dataset.
Replacing Nulls and Blanks at the Column Level
If you need to replace nulls or blanks for a specific column, such as the FirstName column, you can use the column-level replace option:
- Click the Settings option next to the required column to edit the values.
- In the column-level replacing option, you can add a rule for the specific column. For example, replace all values containing “John” with “David.”
- Save the data source after making these changes. With these adjustments, null or blank values in the FirstName column will be replaced with “No data available,” and any instances of “John” will be replaced with “David” according to the custom rule.
