Managing Null Values Through the Utilization of Conditional Formatting in the Bold BI Grid Widget

Published:

The grid widget in Bold BI is a highly effective tool for presenting data in a structured manner. However, it has a default setting that generates empty rows for numerical null data, potentially causing confusion or incorrect interpretation of the data. Thankfully, there is a solution for this issue which involves customizing the grid widget to display an icon through conditional formatting whenever it encounters a null value. This article provides a comprehensive guide on how to successfully implement this customization.

Steps to Customize Null Values in a Grid Widget

1.Create an Expression:

The initial step involves developing an expression that can effectively evaluate the presence of null values. This particular expression will serve the purpose of customizing the representation of Null values within the grid widget. In cases where the field is null, the expression will result in a value of 1; conversely, it will yield a value of 0 if the field is not null. The conditions for this expression are as follows:

2.Configure and Customize the Grid Widget Using Conditional Formatting:
  1. Configure the grid widget and bind the desired field for visualization.
  2. Access the conditional formatting dialog located in the properties of the Grid widget.
  3. Within the conditional formatting dialog, choose the rule condition and select an expression field from the options presented in the Based on drop-down menu.
  4. In the Summary Type drop-down, designate the aggregation type for the selected expression field as “Max”.
  5. Implement the condition as depicted in the screenshot provided and proceed to save the modifications.

3. Result:

Upon completing the aforementioned steps, the Bold BI grid widget will be rendered with Dash icons denoting null values. This enhancement facilitates the identification and management of null values within your data, thereby enhancing the clarity of your data visualizations.
